I have been using AE for a couple of weeks. My experience has been OK.

A few issues:

1. Hangs. Sometimes I just have to disable firewall due to blocked traffic flow in the middle of a session with a known working app.

2. Firewall app block list. When adding apps by clicking the switch selector, I get random results. Sometimes it adds some, but not all, selected apps. Sometimes it unselects apps. And sometimes it adds unselected apps.

3. Firewall conflicts with android auto.

4. Cannot get adblicking to enable. This despite meeting all criteria to do so.

5. Support through WhatsApp is unresponsive.

Hi @stuey,

Thank you for taking the time to use AE and share your feedback. I’m sorry you’ve been running into these issues. Let me address each point and outline next steps:

1. Connection hangs / blocked traffic
• We’re attempting to reproduce this internally. If you notice the issue again, could you let us know which app version you were using and whether disabling the firewall immediately restores the connection? How often does this occur and how many hours of active firewall is needed to reproduce the issue?

2. Firewall app block‑list behaviour
• We are investigating. A short screen recording of the steps that result in missing or extra selections would be invaluable.

3. Android Auto conflicts
• Does the problem occur only while Android Auto is active, or also when the phone is connected to the car via Bluetooth/USB without Android Auto? Any additional context will help us pinpoint the cause.

4. WhatsApp support
• If you haven’t received a reply yet, something went wrong and we apologise. We aim to respond within 48 h — we’ll double‑check your ticket.

Logs & diagnostics
Could you please send us a diagnostic log captured right after the problem happens? You can export it from Settings → Support → Send Feedback and email it to support@chickenhook.de (or send it via WhatsApp). Please mention “Thread 102 – stuey” in the subject so we can link it to this post.

We really appreciate your help — your feedback is essential to making AE better. We’ll update this thread as soon as we have any findings from our tests.

Thanks again,
— Chick3nh00k

Thanks for the reply. I will try to address each issue:

1.I think the disconnect/reconnect issue may be related to wireless fast roaming. I have a mesh wireless network where I have a router/gateway connected to two APs, one in the front of the house and once in the back. The router takes care of all of the NAT, DHCP, and session state management for the network. The APs use 802.11s mesh, and 802.11k,r,v based fast roaming. They have wired backhaul to the router. My phone will switch from one AP association to the other, but maintains it's MAC/ARP and NAT sessions at the router. But I suspect that this is where AE runs into issues, when the hand off between AP's occurs.

The same thing happens when I lose wifi and move to cellular connection, I have to disable and reenable AE firewall. I will try to force this to happen and capture in a log file for you.

2. I will make a recording of my frustration with adding and removing apps from the block list and send it to you.

3. The firewall blocking of bluetooth only association to my car seems to be ok. But when I want to use Android Auto, the VPN blocks the wifi connection Android Auto uses. What you need to support is split tunneling so that Android Auto can go around the VPN. The whole point of Wireless Android Auto is to avaoid changing the configuration of your phone when you get in your car.

4. The WhatsApp support should be prefaced by telling the user what level of response timeliness to expect. The terse answer I got was worse than if you gave me no answer at all. The response given here is much much better.

I will enable logging and diagnostics again and send you logs.

Thanks

Hi @stuey,

We were able to reproduce this issue and are happy to be able to announce a bugfix. The version will be >= 8.4.48 and will be available in the beta channel soon. Step by step we will also release it to the production channel. Probably the fix will be fully released within the next 14 days.

Thank you for your feeback and help to improve our product.

PS: Feel free to message back here if this particular issue was solved for you.
