The Importance of Reading and Verifying: How I Almost Got Scammed
Yesterday, I almost became a victim of an online scam — and it all started with something as simple as selling my shoes. A potential buyer contacted me and showed immediate interest. No questions about the size, the condition, or even the price. That alone should’ve raised a red flag, but I was naive and eager to close the deal. The buyer sent me a QR code for payment and instructed me to scan it to receive the money. Thankfully, before proceeding, I ran the link through our app’s Web Content Evaluation feature. (Read #4: Potential Risk) — the warning was right there in front of me. But I ignored it.
Still convinced it might be a legit buyer, I continued the transaction process. But then, something unexpected happened: my bank blocked the website. It turns out the fake payment portal wasn’t supported by my bank — and that saved me from entering my details and potentially sending money instead of receiving it. I realized afterward just how close I was to being scammed. When I messaged the buyer to request a different payment method, I got no reply. Clearly, their interest ended the moment the scam didn’t work. If it weren’t for our app’s web risk alert, I might’ve walked straight into a trap.
Let this be a reminder: Always read the warnings. Always verify the links. Scammers are getting more creative every day. But a moment of caution and the right tools can save you from a costly mistake. Stay safe out there.
